Enchylaena tomentosa (Ruby Saltbush) is a drought tolerant plant which has multiple uses. Growing to a height of 1 metre, its leaves have a salt taste and its red berries are traditionally regarded as a natural energy boost. The leaves and shoots of Ruby Saltbush were both traditionally cooked and eaten. Ruby Saltbush will grow in a wide range of soil types but does best in soils that have good drainage. It can be used to create a low barrier hedge, as a pot plant on a sunny balcony or as a rockery plant. Ruby Saltbush is a habitat plant for numerous bird species with a special association with the White Winged Triller.
